crossfit_up_dog_logoSince its inception in 2000, CrossFit has grown to encompass a whole new culture of devotees. Offered in over 4,400 affiliated gyms nationwide, the practice of CrossFit centers around performing workouts posted on the CrossFit site–their WODs, or, Workouts of the Day–that involve consistent, varied, high-intensity movement and last around 20 minutes. Classes include these workouts, plus training in new movement, warm-ups and cool-downs. Members of CrossFit community post the results of their efforts on the official CrossFit website.

Because it’s done in a group environment, CrossFit offers a community that holds you accountable, but also offers emotional support during workouts. The only real competition is with yourself, and success is nothing more than doing a little better every time you try. CrossFit is not intended to be a fad workout or part of some crash diet. It becomes part of your daily life. Exercises rely on the simplest of equipment to achieve a kind of fitness that helps you at home, at work, and at play.

What exactly is CrossFit?

It’s a non-specialized form of exercise that incorporates tasks you would perform in your daily life, preparing you to take on challenges both simple and advanced and be in your top form doing it. A scalable program, it works for all skill levels and age groups, placing emphasis on measurable results and real-world payoffs.These exercises–which typically include everything from traveling with weights to squats, rope climbs and interval training–can be cranked up or down to fit your required intensity level. Classes push you to your personal limit, but are safe and effective. The group environment engenders camaraderie and competition, keeping you inspired as you get to your goal. In the words of founder Greg Glassman, “CrossFit is, quite simply, a sport–the ‘sport of fitness.”

CrossFit describes itself as “evidence-based fitness,” relying on safety, efficacy and efficiency as well as on repeatable actions and results. When properly done, EVERYONE will see a result from these workouts, no matter what his or her fitness level. CrossFit has developed a culture, both on the internet and in its classrooms. When joining the program, you will have an environment of support unlike any other. It’s why we’re making it one of our keystone programs at Core Fitness.
